HOME - decorative wood mirror

Hi!  This is Joyce Shaulis with my August project theme, Exploring Our Backyard.  I chose to create something with mountains as that is where I grew up, and now we live in the foothills, but get to view our beautiful Rocky Mountains every day.  Today, I will show you how to create this decorative wood mirror using the Susan K. Weckesser products.

With the blue scrapbook paper, use Mystery and Sky Color Pop Mini inks to stamp "Celebration of Simple" triangles.  Stamp three in Sky and two in Mystery.

With a small brush, paint snow caps with Titanium White paint.  Brush Primary Blue along right side of mountains.  Cut out the mountain shapes.

Insert a scrap of cardstock onto the mirror to keep it paint free.  Mix Primary Blue and Titanium White to make a light blue color.  Paint frame front with the light blue mix, leaving the last fourth of the frame natural.  Now paint the bottom fourth with Sour Apple.  Paint sky area with Shrimp.  Dry brush Canary on top.  Dry brush light blue over the Shrimp and Canary.  Lightly dry brush the remaining blue area with Shrimp.

Stamp on white cardstock with Mystery, using LeMason house and houses from the Tumbleweed House set with two clouds.  Cut out the sun from Live In Color Tags sheet.  Color stamped images with markers and colors of choice.  Cut out images.

Use the Primary Blue and a cosmetic sponge to add a scalloped border with the Doodle Stencil.
Use Canary and dotted line with stencil to border the mirror.   Stencil or hand paint a fence in Titanium White,  Use the flowers from the Doodle Stencil with Shrimp and Canary in front of fence.  Paint stems and leaves with Sour Apple.

Paint a thin border with Primary Blue around mirror.  With Titanium White and cosmetic sponge, use sequin waste to lightly stencil over the light blue area.  With an old paintbrush and Decou-Page, glue on all cut out images.  Refer to photo for placement.  Add painted butterflies with a small brush.  Stamp HOME down left side of mirror with Mystery and a letter stamp set.

Paint all four sides with Shrimp.  Add stripes in Canary and Sour Apple.  Add detail lines with Primary Blue.

Darken the suns rays with coral marker and add dots to sun.  With charcoal pencil, outline the houses, mountains, sun, clouds, and fence.  Smudge these areas with a Q-tip.  Also, outline the frame edges with the charcoal pencil and smudge.  Completely coat frame front and sides with Decou-page.  When dry, spray with Americana Acrylic Matte Sealer.  Remove cardstock from mirror front.

I hope you enjoyed this project and would to see your version of "Exploring Our Backyard" using Susan K. Weckessers wonderful inks, stamps, and stencils.

The Ornament of a House

Deb here with my first post as a member of Susan's Creative Team. I am thrilled beyond words to be here and work with all of my talented team-mates. For July, we are honoring HOME SWEET HOME and all that it means to us. A lovely Ralph Waldo Emerson quote says "The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it". As I have been getting to know Susan and her team, I felt like I was home, surrounded by friends. Susan has some house stamps that went perfectly with our theme so I decided to create a bulletin board to keep me on track with my team posts. I used a vinyl chalkboard bulletin board that I have been hoarding and adhered it to the closet door in my studio.

I started off by stamping several of Susan's house designs using my new favorite ink--Susan's Colorbox Color Pop Archival Dye Ink in Mystery. I used paper from my scrap drawer as well as some adhesive-backed fabric scraps for the roofs. I then fussy-cut the houses and colored them in with an assortment of  Faber-Castell PITT Artist pens and Tim Holtz Distress markers.

Another technique that I often use is to apply ink to an acrylic block, then color using my Water-brush pens. For the door and  roof of one house, I used the Color Pop Premium Dye Ink in Sky. And to add some texture, I used a piece of ribbon over a window for a curtain. The fence is paper-pieced with some  Simple Stories paper.

The Painted Sentiments stamp set by Susan has some of my favorite words in it.I chose Create, Hope & Inspire to add to my board. Perfect words as I begin my journey with my new team. They were stamped in Colorbox Color Pop inks - Kiss, Sky and CocoaTim Holtz Distress Glitters  of Tumbled Glass, Spiced Marmalade and Seedless Preserves were used to highlight the words. Clouds were punched out of Susan's Bouquet paper and the words were stamped on Live in Color. The circles were punched from Color Burst paper and I added some DoubleClick Skittles in their centers for added dimension. Ranger Distress Stickles Glitter Glue in Icicle and Peacock added a fun touch to the house..

A few other creative touches : a sequin as a doorknob, white polka-dots made using my Signo Uni-ball White Gel Pen, and scrap adhesive-backed fabric paper-pieced for the roofs.

I absolutely LOVE to color and paper-piece and these houses are the coolest stamps to color !! Flowers were cut from Susan's paper - Live in Color. Sequins were again added at the flower centers.

I had so much fun making this project -- my first one with Susan's fabulous Creative Team !! I hope that you enjoyed it too and will continue to follow all of us here.  I also have posted about this project on my blog-  Meticulosity. And the next time you sit down to create something, think about what HOME SWEET HOME means to you. I would love to see what you come up with.

A Journal Page with a Secret

Good Morning Everyone!! Lynne here, and today for my design team post I want to do something a little bit different.  I want to share with you a page from my private art journal and give you a tiny peek into my art brain and to describe a little bit about how my creative process works.  But before I share my page with you I want to share the two guidelines I have made for myself that have made my Art Journaling so much easier and a wonderful journey at the same time!  First I am allowed to use only what is on the counter in front of me (otherwise I become paralyzed with too much choice!) and Second I have to DO whatever my first thought is... No Thinking... otherwise I over think.  I worry waaaay too much about what is "right" or what looks good or what the rules are.... so I made a rule for myself that in my Art Journal ... No Rules Apply and no thinking!  And this applies to what I write as well... I put my pen down and write whatever comes into my head... No Matter What.  Follwing these two rules have taken all the pressure off me when I sit down to "do art" and I love seeing the end result of what comes out of my heart and soul when I am not paying attention!
I started the bones of this page a while ago using a stencil and pushing some modeling paste through it and letting it harden - and there it sat until I was surrounded by scraps from the last layout I created for my design team post.  I also had in front of me - all my dylusion sprays including my new White Linen opaque spray and a cup full of gel pens from my doodling journal.  I sprayed the page with pink and blue dylusions inks and then added a few spritzes of water to soften the colors, letting it run where ever it would. Mostly it ran into the cracks of the stencil pattern which was just fine with me!
Next I glued down all the leftover bits from my last scrapbooking layout without thinking too much about where I wanted them... if it felt right I glued it down.  The word scraps "Beautiful Daydreams" and "Bouqet" are actually the title strips that I cut off the SKW patterned papers I used... Cool huh!  I drew in the word CREATE, and colored it in blue gel pen, but it was too bold for my taste so I faded it back by doodling patterns in white gel pen all over the letters... the end result looked so good I just had to accent it using my liquid glass.
At this point the top of the page started looking a little empty so I stamped some more words in pink ink but again these words seemed too bold for me so I sprayed the entire page with my new white linen dylusions ink and blotted off the excess - it worked like a charm - fading back the too bold words to just where I wanted them.
And finally I just HAD to use this house I had created from Susan's Le Mason stamp, stamping it on three different patterns of paper, cutting it out and reassembling it in colored paper - but if I glued down the house Where would I put my journaling? and then the AH-HA! moment occurred... I would make it a hidden journal box... behind my house...BRILLIANT! And I LOVED it... using some duct tape for strength covered over with some washi tape for decoration this "Journal Flap" will stand up to all the flipping I can give it!
And just when I thought I was done my brain said "Spatter!  You want some white Spatter!"  To get this wonderful solid white splatter I used some watered-down gesso... it really, really works.  And as aways (for me) the final touches with my stickles and a black pen finished off this soft and pretty page.

Well I hope you enjoyed this little trip into my "Art Brain"... and maybe you want to try adopting my little rules to help you take some pressure off yourself and allow you to follow your own artistic instincts and start your own Art Journal!  Just DO IT!
Cheers!
